Desești

Desesti [ deseʃt ʲ ] (Hungarian Desze ) is a town in Maramureş County in northern Romania.

Location

The community Desesti extends to the north of the district, along the river Mara and the national road DN18. It is located 42 km northeast of the county town Baia Mare, 17 km south of Sighetu Marmaţiei, capital of the historic county Máramaros. The highest elevation is the Gutai with 987 m.

History

Desesti was the first time in a document of the Hungarian king Louis I called on March 20, 1360 under the Hungarian name Deszehaza, in which he confirmed the right of possession of the villages in Mara Valley.

Until 1920, the village belonged to Hungary and the Principality of Transylvania, until it was given by the Treaty of Trianon in Romania.

Attractions

The church Cuvioasa Paraschiva, which was built in 1770, is, together with seven other churches of the district since 1999 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As is typical of the churches of Maramures, wood was used as a building material here. Mainly due to the special quality of the production, partly due to Gothic influences, it is one of the most beautiful churches in the country. It houses paintings from 1780 in neo-Byzantine style and antique furniture.

The Mara River is part of the 50 -hectare nature park Munţii Gutai.
