Desolation Sound

The Desolation Sound is a sound on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada. He is popular for its scenic beauty in boat tours.

In the vicinity is the steepest waterfall in North America. In addition, many glaciers have more waterfalls flows directly into the sea.

In Desolation is also home to the largest marine protected area in the province, the Desolation Sound Provincial Marine Park.

Geology

The coast is characterized by igneous rock. The existing fjords caused by the strong glaciation in this region.

History

Before the first Europeans entered the area, the area was inhabited by the Salish. In the summer of 1792, then came two expeditions under the leadership of George Vancouver and Dionisio Alcalá Galiano and Cayetano of Valdés y Flores in the bay. They cooperated with the mapping of the bay. Later, many Europeans arrived in the bay, especially those of the Hudson's Bay Company. After the number of Indians was greatly diminished by smallpox and tuberculosis end of the last century, the number of European settlers rose sharply, as the bay was suitable for good fishing and lumbering. For a large mill was built in Powell River.
