Destination… Out!

Occupation

Destination ... Out! is a jazz album by Jackie McLean, which was recorded in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on September 20, 1963 and released on Blue Note Records.

The album

Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean took off in the early 1960s a large number of albums for the Blue Note label on, starting with Swing, Swang, Swingin ' (1960 ) and ending with Demon's Dance 1968. In 1963 was the alto saxophonist Jackie McLean heavily under the influence of avant-garde jazz of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. This year's unusually busy quintet session with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and trombonist Grachan Moncur III, who also contributed three of the four compositions arose, so also the first track of the album, which is based on a simple theme ballad "Love and Hate". Jackie McLean recorded this in the liner notes, in the play " discover you " abandonment, sadness, and beauty; " every aspect " mix and stand (simultaneously) apart from the others, a work of art " [ McLean 1] Another Moncur -. composition is " Esoteric "; the title is marked by frequent change of pace from 3/4-Takt- to 4/4-time. Hutcherson and Haynes remedy this complex rhythmic figures. [ Jurek 1]

McLean's compositional contribution to the session, " Khalil the Prophet " is stronger than the other titles of his hard bop - influenced origin; . probably the easiest musical tracks on the album [ Spencer 1] The saxophonist notes that the piece of rhythmic variations was coined: " The melody sections have a lot of drum breaks and Roy Haynes händelt that with a destiny that his Championship evidence " [ McLean 1] the last piece of the album comes in turn from Grachan Moncur III. ; "Riff Raff " is a " disguised Blues " says McLean, " Moncur creates a mood with a simple line; Tempo and melody convey a feeling of complete relaxation. " [ McLean 1]

Decorated by Larry Miller Cover of the Blue Note album belongs to the so-called "Out " series of former LP titles like Out There (1960), Out to Lunch ( 1964) by Eric Dolphy and Joe Henderson In'n series ' Out of 1964. [ Blumenthal 1] the critic Robert Spencer contends, however, that McLean, although this so ambitious title of his '60s albums related as Let Freedom Ring, One Step Beyond and Destination ... just out! , finally, never the line for free have exceeded game one Coltrane or Ornette Coleman. [ Spencer 1]

Album Review

Richard Cook and Brian Morton emphasize in their review of the album, which she excelled with the second highest rating, Destination Out! show already in its title the significant influence of the previous free jazz movement in the earlier rather orthodox Bebopper McLean, who nevertheless do not break with the traditions. Therefore Destination is Out! a great album, which combine both directions. Unfortunately, it was one of the forgotten albums of this period. [ Cook 1]

The critic Thom Jurek gave the album in Allmusic the highest rating, ruling Jackie Mclean had with this album - like Eric Dolphy before him - his version of chamber-jazz in the combination of elements of the blues Feelings and the groove of the hard bop with an atmospheric setting. Through his work with Grachan Moncur III and Bobby Hutcherson, he would have reached this spiritual connection with Dolphy's music; the combination of the three musicians with the rhythm section of Roy Haynes and bassist Larry Ridley would give a perfect balance of elements; if there had been a successful Blue Note session after John Coltrane's Blue Train, here she was. Novel in 1966 to open an album with a ballad; and McLean use Moncurs Love and Hate by ausschöpfe all the tonal possibilities with this group; the interplay between the musicians there in the increased sense of form, breaks and rhythm changes. [ Jurek 1]

As with the previous album, One Step Beyond it was the use of intervals which would form the basic motive of this ensemble and base of the Moncur compositions, Jurek writes. His horn lines are economical, impressive, warm and are used by Hutcherson vibraphone as textures. Moncurs compositions are rather angular and more reminiscent of the melodic ideas Ornette Coleman at the beginning of the 1960s than to the modal considerations Coltrane. Hutcherson solo in the middle of the Esoteric complex, intricate melodic framework is especially terrific. [ Jurek 1]

Khalil the Prophet, McLean's sole compositional contribution to the album, show a sense of shape change of the hard bop basics through a harmonious interplay between Hutcherson, Moncur and McLean, McLean was moving deep into the roots of the blues without relying on the mere 4 / to restrict 4 structures. Hutcherson accompany his wonderfully dull solo with percussive styles and arpeggio figures. Moncurs Riff Raff was a strolling blues, which began the vibraphone as a counterpoint; Moncur and McLean create with sensual, funky iridescent blues groove. Of all the Blue Note recordings McLean, says Thom Jurek, many of which belong to the classic recordings of jazz, rage Destination ... Out! thereby out that there expressions true soulfulness and complexity of his compositions, the arrangements and his singing voices. [ Jurek 1]

According to the critic Robert Spencer is the real head of the session Grachan Moncur III; he compares the constellation McLean / Moncur with the Somethin 'Else Album ( 1958) by Cannonball Adderley, at the Cannon Balls " sideman " Miles Davis ultimately abschieße the bird. In Destination ... Out! For the theory that McLean had given away his ( known ) name for a project that will fall out so completely from the series of the other Jackie McLean albums of the time including One Step Beyond, which also Moncur was present. Nevertheless, it was outstanding as Moncur McLean incurred without albums like It's Time or action. [ Spencer 1]

For Spencer 'm alone Moncurs bleak zoom shooting forming "Love and Hate" the importance of the album from where McLean ( 'Love ) and Moncur ( Hate ) would put contrasting solos. McLean play this tremendously subtle. He succeed elaborate music with a larger width of communicative power than in the music of the time was common: Destination ... Out! Although was not in a manner startlingly unconventional as the works of contemporaries such as the then avant-garde, but follow these trends in the integration of "Out " elements into an overall musical framework, what the round will be very satisfactory.
