Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule

The German Evangelical Secondary School ( DEO ) in Cairo is one of eight recognized German schools in Egypt. It pursues the concept of an integrated school of encounter, ie will be received by both German students and students of Egyptian or other descent. It is possible, after twelve years of schooling, the German school-leaving examination (Abitur ) store. Today the school visit about 1400 students, of which over 80 percent are Egyptians.

History

The school was founded in 1873 by the German Evangelical church and was initially a long time a small church school, which was sent from each pastor of the church. Over the years, the school grew steadily and experienced in the course of social unrest in Egypt throughout its history many changes.

Throughout history, the school changed its location. In 1908 she moved to Boulaq. During the First World War, the school was closed. It was not until 1930, she was re-opened in 1939 and closed again. Only eight years after the Second World War came in 1953 under director Artur Hachmeister in the Sharia Dr. Mahmoud Azmi - in Zamalek for the reopening. Since the school was housed in several buildings, old mansions, over the years grew to several hundred students, a new building was erected in Dokki, which could be obtained in March 1977. Traditions

Every year a competition between the DEO and the German School of Athens ( DSA) in the disciplines of Swimming, Athletics and either basketball, soccer or volleyball instead. These flies will alternate between the one team in the city the other.

Traditionally, even the Christmas Bazaar, Klaus- Heller- run and the " bread Action ", are collected in the food for poor residents.

The German Protestant secondary school also organizes the annual pyramid race, which takes place at the Pyramids of Giza in February. It is a running distance of 8 kilometers, starting and ending point is the Pyramid of Menkaure. This race has been held since 1976, and was only exposed in 1991 due to safety concerns.
