The German Higher private school ( DHPS ) is an international school in Windhoek, Namibia. It is located near the center of Windhoek. Main language of instruction is German. The school is attended by nearly 1200 students under the direction of the Director Monika pledges. She is one of about 140 German schools abroad and the only one in Namibia.

History

The DHPS was founded in 1909 under the name " Imperial Junior High School " with twelve students as a school for the German -speaking population in Windhoek. Under the occupation of England and South Africa after the First World War all public schools English or Afrikaans had to introduce as a language of instruction. The " German Realschule Windhoek " was therefore converted to a private school in order to preserve German as a language of instruction. 1962 Finally, the school received its present name.

2009 celebrated the DHPS its 100th anniversary.

Facilities

Today the DHPS includes a kindergarten and all grades through 12th grade ( Reformed advanced). It offers the German Abitur ( according to the German International Baccalaureate ) and Namibian degrees (Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate). It employs teachers from both Namibia and from various German-speaking countries in Europe, especially from Germany.

The school has continued to a boarding school ( boarding school ) with 133 children in care (2009) and operates a sponsorship program for gifted children of non-German mother tongue from poorer parts of the country. This is also the reason why, especially during the last few decades, more and more black children to attend school, to a large extent with the help of scholarships and talented of the state and the school.

The school is still mainly attended by children of the white population, even from Afrikaans - or English-speaking families because of the reputation of the DHPS about the German language group in Namibia and South Africa extends. Approximately 20% of pupils are colored.

Trivia

In 2005, the school under the local television play of the ZDF in Namibia documentation was to see X generation, this accompanied five students of the final year group with different backgrounds. The school building was also Handlungsort in the German TV film For Heaven's Sake - mission impossible ( there as " Nigerian Ministry of the Interior ").
