Deutsches St. Leger

The German St. Leger is a swept traditional horse race since 1881 and is now held on the racecourse in Dortmund. The race covers a distance of 2,800 meters. The organizer is the Dortmunder racing club. Before the Second World War, the race was run at other German racetracks.

The race is named after Anthony St. Leger, who founded the English equivalent of this race in 1776.

The German St. Leger belongs to the flour - Mühlens race over 1600 meters in Cologne and the more than 2,400 meters discharged German Derby in Hamburg- Horn to the most important, discharged annually Flat racing events in Germany. Together, these three races make up the so-called Triple Crown.

Up to and including 2006, only three years old horses were in this race to start. Since 2007, may - as in some international counterparts - including four-year and older horses compete. This measure was taken due to the increasing shortage starter in this race. The now crashed El Tango could enter 2007, both as the first non - three -year-old winner, as well as the first horse that won this race twice in the list of winners by it.

By 2005, the race was a Group 2 race, 2006, it was downgraded to Group 3.
