Deutsches Derby

The German Derby is a horse race of group I. It is traditionally held in parallel with the Irish Derby at the racecourse Hamburg-Horn on the first Sunday of the month of July. It carries over a length of 2400 meters.

The Derby is a performance comparison for three year-old thoroughbred horses. Besides the German gallop derby similar events are held abroad.

History of the German Gallop Derby

After the North German Confederation had in 1867 obtained a constitution and in Berlin the racecourse Hoppe Garden directed by the Union Club (named after the Union race one held since 1834 performance test under classical conditions ) was created and in Vienna since 1868, the price of the Jockey Club ( Austrian Derby) took place in 1869 after a Schwichows Foundation in Hamburg - played the North German Derby for the first time - almost as a social counterweight. The first winner was the horse Investment from the estate of Ulrich von Oertzen.

Only a few times was the German Derby ( so named since 1889) did not run in Hamburg. This was 1919 at the racetrack in Berlin Grunewald, 1943 and 1944 in Hoppe Garden (near Berlin ), 1946 Munich and Cologne in 1947. Only in 1945, the Derby was not used.

The derby was held from 1940 to 1944 as the "Great Germany price of three year olds " and ran the Vienna Derby from 1940 to 1944 as the Grand Prix of Vienna. The derby returned in 1948 to Hamburg and the Grand Prize of Germany three year olds remained in the Soviet occupation zone program. This was run later than Derby the German Democratic Republic.

A constellation that is not possible today. Either is an active coach or rider, but not both in one.

Many large and successful riders simply lacked the necessary luck to ride a winner in the Derby. These include Peter Remmert, Fritz Drechsler and the European record holder Peter Schiergen. As a coach, Peter Schiergen has it been three Derby winners saddled: 2001 Boreal, 2006 Schiaparelli and 2008 Kamsin. In 2008, he was also coach of the second-placed Ostland.
