The Dainty Deutzie ( Deutzia gracilis ) is a small shrub with white flowers from the family of hydrangea plants ( Hydrangeaceae ). The natural range of the species is in Japan and Taiwan. It is often used because of their decorative flowers as an ornamental shrub.

Description

The Dainty Deutzie is up to 1.5 meters tall, broad upright, bushy and finely two pendent shrub. Flower-bearing branches are brown, 5 to 17 centimeters long, glabrous and usually vierblättrig. The leaves have a 2 to 4 millimeters long stem. The leaf blade is bright green, simple, lanceolate, ovate- lanceolate or broadly ovate - lanceolate, 3 to 4.5 inches long and 1 to 1.2 inches wide, acuminate, wedge base and finely serrated edge. There shall be three or four pairs of nerves. The upper leaf surface is covered with three - or four-rayed stellate hairs, the underside with four - or five-, six-pointed rarely pressed- star hair.

The inflorescences are 8-12 centimeters long, erect grapes or narrow panicles from 12 to 25 flowers with bald inflorescence stem. The flower stem is thin and 5 to 10 millimeters long. The flower cup is between 2.5 and 3 mm long with a diameter of about 2.5 millimeters. The sepals are 1.5 inches long, ovate to ovate - triangular, glabrous or loosely hairy. The petals overlap like roof tiles, they are white, 10-12 mm long and 4-6 mm wide, oblong to oblong - lanceolate. The outer stamens are 5-6 mm long with bidentate or pfriemlichen and toothless stamens and stalked, egg-shaped anthers. All inner stamens are bidentate. The three pen are of the same length or slightly longer than the outer stamens. The capsule fruits are hemispherical and have a diameter of about 5 millimeters. The Dainty Deutzie blooms from March to April.

Occurrence and habitat requirements

The natural range is on the Japanese islands of Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku and on Taiwan. The Dainty Deutzie grows in cool moist forests and shrub areas on well drained, moist to wet, acidic to neutral, sandy or gravelly - rich soils in full sun to light shade locations. The species is usually frost hardy, but avoids calcareous surfaces.

The genus name Deutzia reminiscent of the Dutch Council Mr Johan van der Deutz ( 1790-1858 ) of Amsterdam, a sponsor of the Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg, who named the genus. The specific epithet comes from the Latin gracilis, meaning " thin" or " petite ".
