Dezső Gyarmati

Dezso Gyarmati [ dɛʒø ɟɒrmɒti ː ] ( born October 23, 1927 in Miskolc, † August 18, 2013 in Budapest) was a Hungarian water polo player and coach.

Career

Gyarmati was the most successful water polo players in the Olympics at all. He was with the Hungarian water polo team Olympic gold medalist at the 1952 Olympics, 1956 and 1964. Additionally, he won the silver medal in 1948 and 1960 bronze. 1954 and 1962 Gyarmati was European Champion with the Hungarian team. After 1956, the Hungarian national uprising was brutally suppressed, Gyarmati not returned to the Olympics in 1956, first to Hungary, then thought better of it but still. Gyarmati counted with his best time of 58.5 seconds over 100 meters of the fastest water polo players of his time. He played 108 internationals for Hungary.

As a coach, he was 1976 Olympic champion, 1972 Olympic silver medalist and 1980 Olympic third party with the Hungarian national team.

Dezso Gyarmati was married to the Hungarian Swimming Olympic champion Éva Székely ( the marriage was later divorced). Their daughter Andrea was swimming champion in 1970 and won at the Olympic Games in 1972 two medals.

In 1976 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the international swimming sport. His wife and daughter have been awarded this honor. In 2006 he published together with Gergely Csurka a book on the Olympic water polo tournament in 1956.
