DFS Kranich
The DFS Kranich is a glider. It was developed at the German Research Institute for Gliding (DFS ) by Hans Jacobs.
History
Series production of the crane was held in Mannheim in the aircraft division of Karl Schweyer AG. The two-seater was in version 2 between 1935-1939 the most produced glider in Germany. Several hundred copies were made , but exact numbers are not known.
Erich Klöckner reached with a crane, which was towed by a Heinkel He 46 in 5,700 meters in height and disconnected, the first man with a glider on 11 October 1940, 11,460 m the stratosphere. After the altitude record had been due to the war not accepted by the Allied occupying powers, Kloeckner received late 1990s, the official recognition by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI ). It was not until ten years after Klöckner's record flight, this height was surpassed by the American Bill Ivans during a similar scientific program in the Sierra Nevada.
1942 were supplied by the Swedish company AB flygplan in Norrköping at the Swedish Air Force for training purposes 30 Crane. These machines were given the military designation Se 103 Even with Beneš Mráz in the Czech Choceń were made during the occupation DFS Kranich.
Between 1950 and 1952, 50 copies of a slightly modified version of the Kranich II were produced as SZD- C Zuraw II in Poland by PZL- Bielsko.
The Focke -Wulf aircraft factory in Bremen developed and manufactured the Crane III, which was newly developed by Focke- Wulf, revealing nothing in common with its predecessors. The first flight took place on 1 May 1952. The pilot Hanna Reitsch was there. From this machine 37 copies were made . The glider - index is 80
