Dial Records (1946)

Dial Records was an American jazz label, which specialized in bebop.

History of Labels

Dial was founded by Ross Russell, the future biographer of Charlie Parker, 1946; He headed the company for about ten years. The most important musicians who started to dial were, except Charlie Parker Miles Davis, Max Roach and Milt Jackson. Dial Records emerged from the Tempo Music Shop, a record store, which was located in Hollywood and was directed by Russell. Russell's partner was the lawyer Marvin Freeman, who had a collection of 12,000 plates and put the necessary start-up capital for Dial Records available.

The dial- Sessions by Charlie Parker 1946/1947

Russell had heard Charlie Parker play in clubs and decided to bring out plates from him. Originally wanted Russell Charlie Parker in March 1946, when he was staying on the west coast, can take along with Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown and Stan Lewey. Should be guided recordings by pianist George Handy. Lester Young, Milt Jackson, Mobile Phone, Gillespie and others, however, were prevented because of club commitments; so was in a different crew, the first dial- up:

Except Parker looked at this first session Dial- Lucky Thompson, Dodo Marmarosa ( for George Handy ) Arvin Garrison ( for Milt Jackson), Vic McMillan ( Ray Brown) and Roy Porter ( for Stan Lewey ) with. Prior to his return to New York Charlie Parker took for Dial Records sessions on the following:

  • On July 29, the title Max Is Making Wax, as well as an unsuccessful version of Lover Man and the title The Gypsy,
  • On February 1, 1947 multiple takes of Home Cookin ' with Russ Freeman, Arnold Fishkin,
  • On February 19, a session with the singer Earl Coleman ( This Is Always, Dark Shadows )
  • On 26 February 1947, the title Relaxin'At Camarillo, Cheers, Carvin ' The Bird with Howard McGhee, Wardell Gray, Dodo Marmarosa, Barney Kessel, Red Callender, Don Lamond,
  • On March 9, 1947 Dee Dee 's Dance with Howard McGhee, Hampton Hawes and Addison Farmer,
  • On October 28, 1947 recorded in New York Dexterity, Bongo Bop, Dewey Square, The Hymn, Superman, Bird Of Paradise, Embraceable You by Miles Davis, Duke Jordan, Tommy Potter and Max Roach,
  • In the same occupation on November 4, 1947, the title Bird Feathers, Klact - Oveesedstene, Scrapple From The Apple, Out Of Nowhere, Do not Blame Me,
  • On 17 December 1947, the band expanded to include JJ Johnson the title Drifting On A Reed, Qusimodo, Charlie's Wig, Bongo Beep, Crazeology, How Deep Is The Ocean. With this session, the collaboration between Russell and Parker, who recorded for Savoy Records then again ended. The Dial recordings later appeared first on the jazz label Spotlite ( Charlie Parker On Dial).
