Dian Cecht

Dian Cecht [ dian ke ː xt ], also Diancécht, is a legendary figure from the Mythological Cycle of the Celtic mythology of Ireland.

Mythology

Dian Cecht applies in Lebor Gabala Eirenn the son of Easar Breac and the Danu, the father of the brothers Miach, Cian, Goibniu and Sawan and sisters Airmed and Etan. He will also be the great-grandfather Abhcans. He is the ultimate healer of the Tuatha De Danann.

Thanks to his healing he can help in many ways. When Midir loses by a stab with a hazel stick one of his eyes, Dian Cecht replaced him this. He finished three times in nine days, a replacement hand of silver for Nuada, after he had lost his right hand in the battle of Mag Tuired. However, when it ( in a younger version ) Miach, the son of Dian Cecht manage to procure a real hand of flesh and blood for Nuada, and Nuada by his - now restored integrity - can return to the throne, Dian Cecht kills his son out of jealousy.

Warriors who were wounded in battle or had fallen, Dian Cecht immersed in its source of life ( TIPRA Sláine ), which he guards with his daughter Airmed, and heals and brings to life this way. This source is buried by Octriallach, the son of King Fomori Indech and rendered unusable.

Dian Cecht is also regarded as the author of the legal text Bretha Crólige, which deals with the punitive damages in wounds.

Reception

On a parchment from the 8/9 Century of St. Galleer manuscript 1395 ( Abbey Library of St. Gall) has called the name Dian Cechts a healer monk:

A legal text from the 8th century on the duty of healing wounded bears the title: The decisions of the Diancécht.
