Diarmaid MacCulloch

Diarmaid Ninian John MacCulloch ( born October 31, 1951 in Kent ) is an English church historian and theologian. Since 1997 he is professor of Church History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow since 1995 at St Cross College.

Life

MacCulloch studied at Churchill College, Cambridge University history and earned the 1972 Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in 1976. In addition, he obtained in 1973 at Liverpool University a Diploma in Archive Administration, after which he returned to Cambridge under the supervision of Geoffrey Rudolph Elton Ph.D. to obtain (completed 1977). MacCulloch was then Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (1978 ) and the Royal Historical Society (1982). In 2001 he was also appointed to the British Academy Fellow. He is a Doctor of Divinity at the University of Oxford.

In 1976, he joined the Gay Christian Movement.

From 1978 to 1990, MacCulloch was a tutor at Wesley College in Bristol. His teaching, he interrupted to study theology at Ripon College Cuddesdon; after he graduated in 1987 with a diploma this, he was ordained a deacon of the Church of England and served from 1987 to 1988 as pastor at Clifton All Saints with Saint John in the Diocese of Bristol. However, he refused an ordained priest in 1988, whereupon he finished his work as a pastor and again returned to the Wesley College.
