Diego

Diego is a Spanish male first name. It also occurs as a surname.

Origin of the name

Diego is derived from the original Hebrew masculine given name Jacob, specifically from James the Elder, who was called in medieval Spanish as Sant Yago and then as Santiago. Santiago was then interpreted by a known as Sandhi linguistic process as San Diago and San Diego. A similar process there was in Spanish and Portuguese Telmo by name, derived from Sant Elmo.

From the Middle Ages the forms Sant Yago, Diago and Diego have been handed parallel.

  • " Et fue a casa del Rey. E mostrolo a don diago que era del Rey adelantado " ( Fuero de Burgos, about 1240)
  • " [ ... ] Maestro de la cavalleria de Sant Yago et de la orden dita [ ... ] " (Letter of James II dated 1300), PDF.
  • The father of the Cid was called Diego Lainez.

The Catalan in Spain also common form of the name is Jaume.
