Dietrich Stoyan

Kurt Dietrich Stoyan (* November 26, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German mathematician who until 2006 as Professor of Applied Stochastics worked from 1990 at the Mining Academy Freiberg and during this period from 1991 to 1997 served as rector of the university. He conducted research in particular in the areas of queuing theory, stochastic geometry and spatial statistics. Since 2002 he is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Life

Dietrich Stoyan was born in Berlin in 1940 and graduated from 1959 to 1964 studying mathematics at the Technical University Dresden. Subsequently he worked until 1975 as a research associate at the German fuel Institute in Freiberg. During this time he obtained in 1967 at the Mining Academy Freiberg PhD ( thesis A) and eight years later the habilitation ( thesis B). From 1976 he worked at the Mining Academy Freiberg as a lecturer and from 1990 to 2006 as a professor of applied stochastics. From 1991 to 1997 he served as rector of the university.

The focus of research by Dietrich Stoyan were the queuing theory, stochastic geometry and spatial statistics. Since his retirement he devoted to the history of Freiberg.

He is the brother of the computer scientist Herbert Stoyan and the mathematician Gisbert Stoyan.

Awards

Dietrich Stoyan was June 1990 Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR since 1992 and is a member of the Academia Europaea since 2000, the Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and since 2002 the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The Technical University of Dresden ( 2001) and the University of Jyväskylä (2004) awarded him an honorary doctorate. From the Mining Academy Freiberg, he was honored in 1997 with the University Medal and a year later with the title of Honorary Senator.
