Diffa

Region

Diffa is the capital of the region of Diffa in Niger. It has around 46,000 inhabitants.

Geography

Diffa is located in the southeast of the country in the Sahel. The city is bordered to the west on the community Chétimari, north and east on the community Gueskérou and on the south by the Borno state in neighboring Nigeria. The border with Nigeria is formed from the river Komadugu Yobe. In geological terms, the city is located in a the Quaternary era allocated area. The city is divided into seven districts, 17 administrative villages, 18 traditional villages and a hamlet. The Neighborhoods hot Adjimeri, Affou Nouri, Diffa Koura, Festival, Nouveau Carré, Résidence and Tchariram.

History

Up until the 1960s, Diffa was a small village. In independent Niger since 1960 a comprehensive administrative reform was adopted on 17 July 1964. The role of capital of the newly created department in the southeast of the country was between Maïné - Soroa and N'Guigmi contentious, the two then most important cities in the region. As a compromise, the choice fell on the village of Diffa.

The new regional capital began to grow continuously. In addition to the oldest districts of Diffa - Koura and Affounori emerged more residential area. 1979 was the first time the national championship in the lutte traditionnal, a popular martial art in Niger, in Diffa instead. In 1985, Diffa than twelfth place in Niger the status of an independent municipality ( commune). Population

In the 1977 census, Diffa had 4253 inhabitants in the census in 1988 13,387 inhabitants in the 2001 census 23,233 inhabitants. For the year 2010 46.439 inhabitants were calculated.

Policy

The municipal council ( conseil communal ) of Diffa chose 14 July 2011 Ousmane Koussouri ( MNSD - Nassara ) for mayor and Hankouraou Biri Kassoum ( FASHIONS -FA Lumana Africa) as Vice- Mayor. The council has 13 members.

Economy and infrastructure

Especially for the informal economy Diffa is an important center for trade with Nigeria and the neighboring region of Zinder. The most widely used currency is the Naira of neighboring Nigeria. At the weekly market especially food offered. Diffa is an important trading center for red peppers, called because of its high market value as " red gold". The pepper is grown in the department on a narrow strip of land along the Komadugu Yobe and sold in dried form to Nigeria and Zinder, Maradi and Niamey. Potentially threatened Chilli growing is caused by diseases of plants by low rainfall and low water level at Komadugu Yobe, which may result from Nigerian dams such as the Tiga Dam.

In Diffa, there are 175 primary schools, two of which are private schools. At a primary school teacher average of 26 students come ( 39 nationwide ). Diffa is the seat of the Tribunal de Grande Instance, one of the nation's ten civil courts of first instance.

The city is located on the National Road 1 in Diffa is a civilian airport, the Diffa Airport ( ICAO code: DRZF ).
