Digby Jones, Baron Jones of Birmingham
Digby Marritt Jones, Baron Jones of Birmingham, of Alvechurch and of Bromsgrove in the County of Worcestershire Kt ( born October 28, 1955 in Birmingham ) is a British lawyer, business manager and Labour Party politician, who since 2007 as a life peer member of the House of Lords.
Life
Solicitor and Manager
After schooling Jones absovlierte to study law at University College London ( UCL) and entered 1978 as an employee in the law firm Edge & Ellison Solicitors and was there in 1980 until Assistant Solicitor, before 1981, he was an associate partner. In 1980 he became a member of the Law Society. Since 1984 he has been a partner of the firm since 1987 and Head of Corporate Affairs. In addition, in 1990 he was deputy senior partner and was between 1995 and 1998 Senior Partner at Edge & Ellison Solicitors.
Subsequently, Jones was from 1998 to 1999 and Vice - Chairman for Corporate Finance at KPMG and between 2000 and 2006 General of the Employers' Association Confederation of British Industry (CBI ). In addition, he was from 2002 to 2007 Member of the Commission for Racial Equality from 2003 to 2005 and director of Visit Britain, and between 2003 and 2006 Member of the National Council for Education and Skills. Jones, who was a Knight Bachelor in 2005 and from then on the additional name "Sir" led, since 2006 has been a senior consultant at Deloitte and was between 2006 and 2007 Government Commissioner for skills.
House of Lords member
By Letters Patent of 10 July 2007 Jones was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Jones of Birmingham, of Alvechurch and of Bromsgrove in the County of Worcestershire to the peerage. Shortly afterwards, was his introduction ( Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords. In the House of Lords he first heard of the Group of the Labour Party, but switched on 3 October 2008 to the group of so-called Cross Bencher. In the meantime he was on 29 June 2007 to October 3, 2008 Minister of State for Trade and Investment in the Ministry of Trade, industry and regulatory reforms in the government of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Subsequent activities
After retiring from the government, Lord Jones again took over many functions in the private sector and is currently one of the Chairmen of Triumph Motorcycles Limited and member of the Royal British Legion.
Furthermore, Lord Jones, the patron of the organization 's women fight breast cancer is Vice President of Hospice of Birmingham and UNICEF. In addition, he serves as a member of the Development Board of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Lord Jones is a Fellow of University College London (2004) and holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Central England ( 2002). He is an honorary member of several British universities.
