DigitalGlobe

DigitalGlobe is a company based in Longmont, Colorado, which offers satellite images. DigitalGlobe has 350 employees (as of 2006).

The company was founded in 1992 as Earth imaging and information company. In the same year it received the approval of the U.S. Department of Commerce against the backdrop of the country Remote Sensing Policy Act, to be able to take high-resolution images from space.

With the launch of the satellite Quickbird 2 on 18 October 2001 DigitalGlobe took the world a top position among providers. Google Earth and Maps, for example, derive their material of DigitalGlobe. The company has taken 2007, WorldView-1 and WorldView-2 2009 with additional satellites in operation. The launch of WorldView -3 is scheduled for August 2014.

With effect from 30 January 2013 DigitalGlobe merged with its competitor GeoEye.

Media response

Published in 2011 DigitalGlobe image of a hitherto unknown first aircraft carrier of the People's Republic of China. The picture showed the former Russian carrier " Varyag " at the Chinese coast in the Yellow Sea. The company said that already on December 8, 2011 Photos were shot from the aircraft carrier " Varyag ". An analyst of the company had met when searching the photos on the recording.
