Province

Sishen [ sɪʃɘn ] (of Setswana Sesheng, New Location ') is a settlement and a mining area in South Africa's Northern Cape Province. It is located in the municipality in the district Gamagara John Taolo Gaetsewe and is known for its iron ore mining.

Geography

Sishen is situated in the sparsely populated inland, over 600 kilometers from the sea. To the west of the mine is the settlement Dingleton. The town of Kathu is twelve kilometers north-east and as Dingleton of miners and their families lived. The town of Kuruman as nearest major town is located around 60 kilometers north-east.

The Sishen South Project, also Kolomela mine, is another iron ore mine 80 km south of Sishen.

According to the 2011 census were living at that time in the statistical district Sishen total of 11,034 people. In the settlement Sishen mine there were proportionately 5,105 persons in systematically structured settlement Mapoteng contrast, 5,929.

History

In 1947 the iron ore mining in the Sishen Mine. For the removal of the ore the 1973-1976 established and leading to the Atlantic coast railway line Sishen - Saldanha serves. In 1990 the settlement was renamed in Sishen Dingleton.

Economy and Transport

2010 41.3 million tons of iron ore were promoted in Sishen. While iron ore contains an average of only about 30 percent lump ore and fine ore 70 percent worldwide, the ratio in Sishen is about 60 percent to 40 percent. The mine is one of the largest in the world. The mine is one of the South African company Kumba, the mining group Anglo American is one of around 65 percent. The ore is moved by heavy trucks of the type "Komatsu 730E " for the crushing plant. The trucks can load each 150 to 170 tons of cargo and are equipped with pantographs, so that they can make use of an overhead line when driving uphill with charge.

The ore is transported via 861 kilometer railway line to the ore terminal in the port of Saldanha. The trains are two miles long, partly to four kilometers, and are among the heaviest freight trains of the world. The route is electrified.

The Sishen Airport is closer to Kathu than at Sishen. The national road N14 leads east past Sishen.
