Dirck Hals

Dirck Hals ( baptized March 19, 1591 in Haarlem, † May 17, 1656 ) was a Dutch painter of realism.

Life

Dirck Hals was the younger brother of Frans Hals and the third son of clothier Franchoys Fransz neck from Mechelen, and his wife Adriaentgen van Geertenryck from Antwerp, which is called at the baptism entry Adriana neck. Dirck had two older brothers, both were born in Antwerp: Frans Hals ( 1580/85-1666 ), whose artistic shadows Dirck should be life and Joost neck ( 1584-1626 ), who was also a painter. The neck family emigrated to the north of the Netherlands, after Antwerp fell to the Duke of Parma in August 1585. The mention of Dircks baptism in the Reformed Church in Haarlem on March 19, 1591 is the first witness of their resettlement. He received the first lessons from his eleven years older brother Frans Hals, who was taken in 1610 as a member of the painters' guild of St. Luke. The two artists Esaias van de Velde and Willem Pietersz. Buytewech, in whose workshop he worked, exerted particular influence on him.

The largest part of his life spent Dirck Hals in his hometown of Haarlem. From 1618 to 1624 served neck in the 2nd Company of the third squad of the St. George's Archers, who belonged to his brother Frans since 1615. From 1618 to 1626 he was a member of " De Wijngaertranken " the Rhetorikervereinigung, who was also his brother Frans.

It was not until 1627, he was admitted as a member of the Guild of St. Luke. 1620 or 1621 he married Agneta ( Agniesje ) Jansdr and 1621-1635 seven of their children were born. The only son, Antonie neck (1621-1691), started his own business as a portraitist and painter of genre scenes in Amsterdam, where he is first mentioned on 21 June 1652.

In the years 1641-1643 and 1648 Dirck Hals lived in Leiden. Before moving to Leiden, where he rented a house on 22 February 1641 Dirck met ( 1613-1663 ) with the Amsterdam painter and art dealer Pieter Jansz van den Bosch. Dirck Hals died in Haarlem and was buried on 17 May 1656 in the Begijnhofkerk. Dirck Hals was already during his lifetime as well respected painter.
