Dirck Rembrantsz van Nierop

Dirck van Nierop Rembrantsz (* 1610 in Niedorp, † November 4, 1682 ) was a Dutch cartographer, astronomer, mathematician and surveyor of the 17th century.

Importance

Dirck van Nierop Rembrantsz wrote more than thirty scientific books. The Nieuw Dubbelt Nierper Graed - boeck was launched in 1683 to nine times. The Nieropper almanacs published annually from 1655 to 1683. Dirck van Nierop Rembrantsz has issued one of the journals of the explorer Abel Tasman. He was also one of the specialists for navigation means the Dutch East India Company.

He has also developed many sundials. As a teacher, he had a lot of control men and captains. Among his students:

  • January Albertsz van Dam (teacher of Tsar Peter the Great) ( Horn, 1717)
  • Pieter van Nierop Rembrantsz, author of many books such as almanacs ( Nieuwe Niedorp 1640 - Hoorn 1708), his nephew
  • Cornelis Pietersz Neuvel, born in Niedorp, from 1682 accountant at the yard and teacher of the art of navigation in Emden
  • Peter Maassen Smit, about 1680 teachers of the art of navigation in Blokzijl.

He maintained friendly or business contacts with Christiaan Huygens, Nicolaas Witsen, Gerrit van Goedesbergh and René Descartes and maintained an extensive scientific correspondence, including with Frans van Schooten, the scholar and statesman Nicolaas Witsen, the Gdańsk astronomer Hevelius of Hevel and Christiaan Huygens. His nephew Pieter van Nierop Rembrantsz issued a part of his correspondence from 1653 to 1682. Among them is a letter from Bagge change from Arendal in Norway, who asks him after the calculation of moon stands for 1665 and it offered him three fathoms of firewood.

As a cartographer, he worked with the explorer Willem de Hesselsz Vlamingh. The Europes Paskaart, a nautical chart from 1658, bears his name.

He remained all his life living in his birthplace Niedorp ( Westfriesischer name Nierop ). Allegedly, he was originally a shoemaker, but can also refer to his brother.
