Dirk II, Count of Holland

Dietrich II (Dirk II, † May 6 988 in Egmond ) was from 939 until his death Earl of (West) Friesland.

Was disputed whether he was the son or grandson of Count Dietrich I.. One has considered him for a long time as the son of Dietrich I, but is now believed that he was his grandson. In fact, Dietrich was still very young when he was betrothed to 938 Hildegard of Flanders, the daughter of Count Arnulf I of Flanders and Adele of Vermandois. The marriage was closed 950, children of the couple were:

  • Arnulf, 975 testified X 993 September 18, Earl of (West) Friesland
  • Egbert, † 8/9 December, 976 Chancellor of the Empire, 977 Archbishop of Trier
  • Herlinde, Abbess of Egmond, then Bennebroek

On June 15, 950 Dietrich gave the city of Edmond, a church, which was executed in stone. Presumably, on the occasion of the dedication of this church he founded the dating from the 9th century Gospel Book of Egmond, which he had bought at 975, and is now regarded as one of the most important manuscripts of the Middle Ages in the Netherlands. The work contains all four Gospels, two miniatures that represent Dietrich and Hildegard, and added at the direction of Dietrich. Some historians assume that these miniatures are from the hand of her son Egbert. The manuscript is now in the Royal Dutch library.

After the death of his father († March 27 965 ) was the guardian of his nephew Dietrich Arnulf II of Flanders. In the same year he took the castle of Ghent and retained thereafter the county Gent until his death in his possession. On August 25, 985 he received from Emperor Otto III. Fief to the lower Meuse, the Kennemerland and the island of Texel. Dietrich, Hilde hardware as well as their children and Arnulf Herlinde were buried in Egmond Abbey. Their graves were destroyed in the 1573 uprising of the Beggars.
