Disabled Peoples' International

Disabled Peoples ' International ( DPI) is an international non -governmental organization ( INGO ), headquartered in Canada, with regional offices in Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Latin America and North America and the Caribbean. DPI is a network of national organizations or associations of persons with disabilities, established in 1981 to promote the human rights of people with disabilities through full participation, the approximation of the opportunities and possibilities for development. DPI supports organizations in more than 120 nations with everyday problems.

The objectives of the DPI are

  • Promotion of human rights of people with disabilities;
  • Promote the economic and social integration of people with disabilities;
  • Development and support of organizations of persons with disabilities.

DPI has a special status as a consultant to the United Nations and works with many international organizations and governments of the world.

1992 initiated the association the European day of protest for equality of people with disabilities, which is celebrated annually since then on May 5, 2011, for example, under the theme "Inclusion starts in the mind ." The German branch of the Association represents the interests of independent living.
