A disciple is a member ( follower ) of a jointly following group of disciples. The disciples in the inner circle form a special elite with a particular claim and a prominent authority in the religious community to the leading figure and their teachings and work.

A disciple is more than a student. If there can be outspoken teacher-student ratios in religious references, the relationship of the disciple to the master goes so far beyond that, as the disciples prior to the acquisition of knowledge and skills, for example, the experience of community, personal ties and trust enjoys.

After the death of the founder of the religion, the disciples continue to act as its representative ( " eyewitnesses " ) and administrators of the religious teachings of the leading figure. You can thus form as a community of the witnesses and administrators to death the prerequisite to the emergence of new sects within a religion or outside to a new religion. All members of the religious community to the leading figure and their teachings and ministry that are not disciples are called followers. After the death of the figurehead and their disciples therefore, there is only religious followers.

And in Surah 61 verse 14:

- O you who believe, be helpers of Allah as ' Isa, son of Mary, said to his disciples: "Who will be my helpers to (the work of) Allah (there )? " The disciples said: "We are Allah's helpers. " So thought a portion of the Children Isra'ils, while a (another ) part was incredulous.
