Discordian calendar

The Diskordianische calendar (also: Discordian calendar) is a calendar system that is used by followers of Discordianism. It divides the year into five 73 - day cycles (seasons ) or in 73 five-day cycles ( weeks). The Diskordianische calendar is a solar calendar, ie Years in length and change are identical to the currently used Gregorian calendar. Each date has a clear and consistent correspondence in the other system. The diskordianische calendar system was first published as part of the later editions of the Principia Discordia 1969/70. Its structure is based on the Discordian Law of Fives.

Calendar Structure

Months

The Discordian year is divided into five months each 73 days, also known as yearly periods (seasons ) ( in leap years the first month process to take 74 days, but are counted only the regular 73 days). As a German translation of month names, there are also the names of chaos, discord, confusion, bureaucracy and the finale.

The Erisian calendar and the cycle of the five seasons is derived from a kind of creation story, fully described in one of the many bays of the Principia Discordia, Book of the uterus. Thus, at the beginning was chaos which arose by chance from non- existent Chao, from the decay of the active force of discord Discord, a subtle manifestation of the non- existent Chao, emerged, which - if it was active - the state of confusion, Confusion, reached. Confusion is the time of " Balanced imbalance " or " unbalanced balance ". The confusion being established was called Bureaucracy ( " red tape "). In times of Bureaucracy a state of " Balanced Balance" or stagnation is reached. After their case rang The Aftermath (the " conclusion" ) is a an age of disorder. Aftermath is the time of transition and restoration of free-flowing chaos, the state of the initial "Unbalanced Unbalance ". A cycle is said to have repeated five times seventy-three.

The Goddess Eris itself is referred to as the Queen of Chaos, Discord, and daughter of the concubine of Confusion.

Days

The Discordian year has exactly 73 weeks. Each week consists of 5 days a week. Since 365 is divisible by 5, the diskordianische calendar system has the advantageous property that all data such as Birthdays fall on the same day of the week Discordian every year. The year always begins ( 1.1. ) With Sweetmorn, the first day of the week, and ends on New Years Eve (73.5. ) Always with Setting Orange, the fifth and final day of the week. Where in the English setting refers to the environment in which there is a drug experience. The weekdays are named after the five Discordian " elements " sweet ( Sweet ), boom ( roar ), pungent ( Pungent ), prickle ( Sparkling ) and orange ( orange colors). They caricature the esoteric four- element theory.

Also on a five -day week based the -been in the 1930s in use Soviet revolutionary calendar. The principle of the same days of the week can also be found in the concept of a world calendar.

The Law of the Five undertook structure leads to a Discordian Calendar classification, which is based solely on the prime factors of 5 and 23 ( 365 = (5 5) × (5 × 5 ) 5 × 23 ), the 23, in addition to the five, also " recognized holy" Principia Discordia after as is.

Diskordianische Holidays

In each case, the 5th and the 50th days of the five months will be declared Discordian holidays.

The 5 Acts holidays ( Apostle Holydays ) take place on the 5th of each of the 5 months. They are dedicated to one of the five (probably fictitious) name cartridge:

  • Patron Apostle Hung Mung ( Mungtag )
  • Patron Apostle Dr. Van Van Mojo ' ( Mojotag )
  • Patron Apostle Sri Syadasti ( Syatag )
  • Patron Apostle Zarathud ( Zaratag )
  • Patron Apostle Malaclypse the Elder ( Malatag )

After Principia Discordia, in which the apostles are characterized in more detail, Sri Syadasti should not be confused with Blessed St. Gulik the Stoned, " which is not the same person, but the same apostle ".

The five months holidays (Season Holydays ) are held monthly on the 50th. It could also be argued, they found 23 days instead of before month end. Since diskordianische nine weeks between the two holidays a month, thus a multiple of 5 days, both fall always on the same day of the week. As a German translation of the month holidays, there are also the names Chaofluss, Zwiefluss, random flow, office flow and discharge.

The orthographically unconventional in the original spelling of the holidays with y ( Holydays ) they can be expressed as wholly days sound (similar to the phonetic puns Holy Cow Holy Chao and with wholly chao ).

The St. Tib 's Day is identical to the calendar with the 29th February and is used as a holiday about every four years similar to the leap day instead. The fact that it is inserted between the 59th and 60th day of the first month ( chaos) and it is also associated with no own day, is the reason why even in leap years day and day of week of the Discordian calendar always correspond to the same day in the Gregorian calendar and vice versa.

(Switching ) years

Beginning and thus the fixed point Erisian era is the year 1166 BC

The intent behind the yearly counting may well have been the consistent application of the law of five, 55 = 3125 to synchronize the Discordian year with the Year of Discordianism, resulting in the aforementioned offset of 1166 years to the Gregorian calendar: 1959-55 = -1166.

In the Principia Discordia is referred to as switching cycle " once in four years," which led to sporadic St. Tib 's Day disputes. In the Gregorian calendar accounts for leap days in full centuries that are not year four hundreds, so that a anerisisch - literal switching rule interpretation drifting apart of the calendar systems by about three days in four hundred years would result (analogous to the earlier Julian calendar). However, it's two times that it was an " everlasting " and a " Gregorian " calendar key. Thus it can be assumed that the St. Tib 's Day according to the Gregorian leap year rule for the first time in the years 2100 (3266 Yold ), 2200 (3366 Yold ) and 2300 (3466 Yold ) is omitted.

Date Formats

While the Gregorian date format is standardized (ISO 8601), numerous date versions are in Discordianism possible (and desirable ). In order to distinguish annual data, is often Yold by Discordian years, which means as much as Year of Our Lady of Discord ( "Year of Our Lady of Discord "), an allusion to the Christian persiflierende "Year of Our Lord ".

  • Sweetmorn, 1 Chaos 3173 Year of Our Lady of Discord
  • SM, 1 Chs 3173 Yold
  • 23 Discord
  • Cfn 69
  • St. Tib 's Day 3170
  • Bureflux 3172
  • 73.5.3173

To convert a date in the Discordian calendar, the program serves ddate ( discordian date), in which various Discordian date formats are adjustable; ddate is installed by default in many Linux distributions. For Microsoft Windows ddate can be found in the collection CygUtils program for Windows.
