The river near Brézé

The Dive is a river in France, which runs into the regions of Poitou -Charentes and Pays de la Loire. It rises in the municipality of Maisonneuve, drained generally in a northerly direction, reaches the Regional Natural Park Loire -Anjou- Touraine and ends after 74 kilometers below Saint -Just- sur-Dive as a right tributary to the Thouet. On her way she crosses the departments of Vienne, Deux -Sèvres and Maine -et -Loire.

Shipping

The section of river between the mouth and the location Pas -de- Jeu ( 28 km ) is channeled and part of the Canal de la Dive, which is continued on the Thouet and further leads to the Loire estuary. Originally planned as a link between the Loire and Charente, the existing part was taken in 1834 in operation, the further development has been stopped. On the Dive 9 locks were built, the (32 x 5.20 meters) and reflected contemporary ship standard Becquey. The canal was mainly used by Treidelkähnen, mostly country products delivered for further transport to the Loire. Through the expansion of the railway freight volume declined more and more, the shipping traffic on the canal in 1957 was discontinued altogether.
