Dolce Gusto

The Nescafé Dolce Gusto is an established in 2005 coffee capsule system of the Nestle Corporation. The products are marketed under the brand name Krups.

Devices

The first series of 2006 consisted of the models KP2000 (Black / Silver), KP2006 (Black / Silver / Red) and KP2002 (Black / Silver / White ). As further versions were later added an issue in the refueling area is silver (in the case of KP2002 is the tank area black).

Common to all is the pressure of 14 bar

End of 2008, the new series was introduced, which brought some novelties. These include:

In addition, the KP21xx ( Melody2 ) models are offered in a lot more colors. At the beginning of the two series existed even further next to each other, as of September 2010 are the stocks from.

In mid-2009 the KP21xx/Melody2 machines are supplemented by the Circolo series. This, as the name suggests, round design is technically equivalent to Melody2 devices, but still has a LED lighting for the cup area.

In September 2010, the previous two series were supplemented by three more. The Piccolo ( KP10xx ) is technically on the state of the Melody2 machines and to appeal to customers with limited space. The Fontana ( KP30xx ) is inspired by design, to a water tap and technically in turn according to the Melody2 devices. The Creativa corresponds to the optically Melody2 machines, but also comes with an LCD display. About this can be programmed and automatically turn on the machine, for example. In addition, you can now program also discharge amounts to whatever the cups used to always use the same amount of water and therefore also always get the same taste. The capsule varieties already available here are preprogrammed, but can also alter.

The devices work, depending on the series, with 14 or 15 bar pressure is generated by a vibration pump.

Capsules

The Dolce Gusto capsules have been developed since the early 1990s, consisting of a five-part plastic / aluminum composite:

The capsule shell ( 2) from a deep-drawn two-layer plastic film laminate has a bottom outlet opening ( 4), by running the finished beverage directly into the cup without contact with the machine. Above the drain opening is located in the capsule inserted filter base (5), the underside of which is designed as a labyrinth, thereby supporting the formation of crema, or serves as a type of static mixer for powdered milk. On top of the filter floor mandrels ( 3 ) are mounted, the pressurization of the capsule perforating the one over the spikes lying expanding bottom aluminum sheet (6 ), so that fluid can pass with solutes. In the out of aluminum foil and another from the outside not visible perforated plastic release film ( 8) formed chamber (7) is the actual preparation powder (eg, coffee or milk powder). A further chamber (9) between the separating film and the upper film outside the visible printed cover (1 ) of the capsule is used to compensate for different portion of the volume of the powder composition with unchanged external dimensions of the capsule. Simultaneously, the plastic release film keeps powder preparation back after the use in the capsule. The upper visible film lid is perforated by the machine with a hollow mandrel through which the hot water is pressed in the preparation of the capsule.

About the number of pins on the bottom of the filter can also be the pressure or the flow rate of the water set - at the cappuccino capsule there are eg nearly 70 mandrels, the associated milk powder only 44 - in the milk powder capsule also lacks the perforated release film.

An empty capsule weighs approximately 3.4 g

Other Nestlé systems

In contrast to the Nespresso system, which also comes from the house of Nestlé and Krups has one of the major hardware vendors, the Dolce Gusto capsules are readily available commercially. With Nespresso, you can order these online or only in special Nespresso stores.

Criticism

In the criticism of the coffee pod and coffee capsule systems are partly due to the so-called lock-in. This means that the cost for each coffee machines are low, the subsequent costs for the coffee pods or capsules for it - higher than that of conventional coffee - sometimes several times.

The capsule systems are currently not compatible with each other, for each system, different types of coffee capsules are required. These are only available from their respective manufacturers.

The accumulated amount of waste generated by the composite packaging of the coffee capsules is high relative to pad systems and classic filter coffee and pollutes the environment.
