Nespresso

Nespresso is it launched from the Swiss food company Nestlé coffee system. Here, the coffee is portioned in aluminum capsules and cooked in special coffee machines.

Sales concept

The retailer sells the coffee machines; the capsules were expelled pointed directly exclusively by Nespresso. Since the fourth quarter of 2011, there are also capsules of other providers which in the supermarket and retail chains such as Rewe ( Germany ) or SPAR ( Austria ) are available. In order to promote the sale of machines, Nespresso cooperates with companies whose brands are vouch for superior quality. Here, these sales brand partners vary from country to country, because not every brand is well known in every country. Thus, all devices that are sold in Germany as Krups devices marketed in Austria and Switzerland under the name turmix. Other well-known partner in the German-speaking area are DeLonghi, Miele, Siemens and Switzerland Koenig. Former partners are Alessi, Saeco and Jura.

With the exception of Lattissima types that originate from Italian manufacturing by De Longhi, all devices in the world's largest producers of coffee machines are made, the Swiss company Eugster / Frismag AG in Roman horn. The coffee machines only work with Nespresso capsules, whose shape is patented. There is also the other way around, no machines for ground coffee that work in addition with Nespresso capsules. This results in a lock-in effect for the customer. The coffee is available for purchase via the Nespresso Club - mail order.

History

According to their own information, the Nespresso system was invented in 1970 research and development department by the engineer Eric Favre in Nestlé and patented in 1976. The launch took place 10 years later (1986 ) in French-speaking Switzerland. Nespresso was initially a flop.

From 1991, after the marketing specialist Jean -Paul Gaillard had taken the lead in Nespresso and the system with the Krups machine partner was offered internationally, Nespresso became stronger in the market. The breakthrough to the current success brought George Clooney, who was hired by Nespresso CEO Gerd Berssenbrügge as an ideal advertising character.

Although the Company " Nestlé Nespresso SA " based in Lausanne belongs to the Nestlé group, but acts independently on the market. The company is currently led by Richard Girardot. It operates in 38 countries and sales in 2006 increased compared to 2005 by 42% to 1.16 billion Swiss francs. In 2006, Nespresso sold 3 billion coffee capsules, 2010, sales of 3.2 billion Swiss francs, sales totaled 4.8 billion coffee capsules.

The number of coffee machines sold at retail increased from 2005 to 2006 by 32% to over 1 million. This Nespresso managed to increase its market share in the espresso machine market from 17.9 % to 22.7 %.

According to a study by Evalueserve of 2005, Nespresso was with a worldwide market share of 11 % of the third largest portion of coffee seller.

Varieties

The coffees offered by Nespresso differ in the coffee beans and the Röstungs and freeness used. There are capsules for the preparation of espresso ( amount is about 40 ml), Ristretto (volume about 25 ml) and larger coffee cups ( about 110 ml - as " Lungo " ) offered. There are also decaffeinated varieties available.

Besides the established varieties, special coffees are offered. In the series Pure Origin coffee is used in only a growing country. For a limited time, special places are offered a limited edition in the spring, the Special Club in the fall and Variations in December.

The following special types are or have been offered include:

Although the Nespresso system backed by a large number of patents, including third-party products are now available on the market.

Operation of the machine

The central element in the preparation of the coffee is the aluminum capsule, which takes place within the entire brewing process. When you insert the capsule into the machine, it is enclosed by the capsule cage, pressed down against a so-called pyramid plate and pierced from above by three spines. When you start the brewing process cooked, hot water is forced at high pressure into the capsule into the machine. Once the pressure within the capsule has become high enough to keep the aluminum diaphragm at the bottom of the capsule that was no longer and rips a. The brewed coffee inside the capsule can now flow out through the so- perforated diaphragm and the holes of the pyramid plate.

Disposal and recycling

The coffee capsules consist mainly of aluminum, which is suitable for recycling. In Switzerland and Austria in a private collection and recycling system was introduced for the capsules. Alternatively recommends Nespresso, to deliver the used capsules in an aluminum collection.

Another way of recycling is to own refilling the capsule with fresh coffee powder. For this purpose, there are numerous instructions. In Switzerland, a recycling unit for the coffee capsules Nespresso is offered with the Outpresso which separates the aluminum from the coffee grounds to the consumer. This allows the aluminum disposed of by metal collection and the coffee grounds can be composted or disposed of by the consumer. This solution therefore has about the same life cycle as aluminum beverage cans.

In Austria and Switzerland, the used capsules can also be made direct from Nespresso shops or in shops where Nespresso machines are out. In Germany, the used capsules can be disposed of in the yellow bin / in the yellow bag. In communities without a ton Yellow / yellow bag ( eg in Munich), the capsules must be delivered to recycling centers or recyclables Islands.

The recycling of the capsules contained therein coffee is not composted, which would represent an ideal, particularly valuable exploitation of the coffee, but the Nespresso coffee burns when smelting of aluminum and is largely disposed of as CO2 in the atmosphere.

Meanwhile capsules have been provided by third parties on various markets that should be composted for example. About this product there was a long patent litigation, but these were currently decided against Nestlé.

Professional users

For professional users with correspondingly higher throughput coffee there is the Nespresso Professional system. This works with flat Nespresso capsules diameter of approximately 40 mm. The Professional capsules are not made of aluminum foil, but from an aluminum-coated plastic film. The system is not compatible with the Nespresso system for consumers and is also distributed differently.

The machines of the Professional system characterized mainly by larger tanks and waste container. Furthermore, there are machines in which the capsules need only be pushed into a slot, and the clamping / perforating / ejection of the capsule is effected by a motor. Used Professional pads can not be issued at Nespresso recycling.

Furthermore, there is the Nespresso Aviation System, which was developed specifically for the aviation industry.

The cleaning work is less than with a permanent filter in this system, but also eliminates the typical for single-serving systems benefit to fumble with neither dry nor wet with coffee powder.

In France, a compatible coffee capsules is offered by the company Ethical Coffee Company since 2011, consisting of cellulose fibers and is biodegradable. In Germany and Austria the capsules of the company Ethical Coffee Company are offered since September 2011 under the name ESPRIMO. From October 2011, the capsules in addition for some time under the name of manufacturing company also in stationary retail (shops Rewe Group) were available. Stiftung Warentest has, however, found in a study that the capsules are not - are fully biodegradable and compostable - as promised. The reason: They contain a thin layer of aluminum, which does not degrade himself. In addition, the bioplastic used in the capsules for composting is useless because it does not contain any nutrients or minerals. Therefore, the capsules are not included in the organic waste bin or the compost heap, but in the residual waste. In a taste test, the panelists came to the conclusion that the coffee from the Ethical capsules tested taste and appearance could not keep up with Nespresso capsules.

Competing systems include Dolce Gusto ( also Nestlé), Senseo and Tassimo.

Criticism

One drawback is the enormous amount of waste generated by the coffee capsules. If these are not disposed of properly, the aluminum of the capsule lands as good as ever in residual waste and can not be recycled. A large part of the high energy required for the production of aluminum capsules is thus lost. However, the recycling of aluminum is extremely energy intensive compared to coffee. Furthermore, it must afford Nespresso in Austria no disposal fee because the capsules of Nespresso brand not constitute packaging (as well as tea bags or wax layers of cheese or sausage ).

In the Critique Nespresso machine, like other manufacturers of portioned Kaffeepadsystemen for which no alternative on the market quotations are available, due to the so-called lock-in effect. This means that the cost for each coffee machines are often low, the price of the coffee in the capsules for it - some many times - higher than that of conventional coffee. The price of Nespresso coffee is up to 80 euros per kilogram of coffee. Circumvention of this effect have different companies with a system of single-use capsules for refilling.

From various manufacturers such as Senseo or Mondelez cheaper, compatible with Nespresso capsules are available. Due to technical modification of the coffee machines, however, Nestlé tries to make this third-party capsules incompatible, so as to obtain the capsule monopoly on their machines.

In September 2011, the NGO solidarity Suisse launched a campaign calling on Nespresso to offer fair trade coffee. The focus of the campaign was a parody of a Nespresso commercial with George Clooney. Nespresso rejected the criticism.
