Domingo Báñez

Dominigo Banez (* February 29, 1528 in Medina del Campo, Old Castile, † October 22, 1604 ibid; actually Domingo Banez also Vanez or Ibáñez ) was a Spanish Dominican, theologian, confessor of St. Teresa of Avila.

Life

At 15, he began his study of philosophy in the University of Salamanca. In 1546 he converted to the Dominican monastery of St. Stephan and provided from 1551 the teaching philosophy and theology. On May 3, 1547 he was professor. In the years 1561-1566 was Banez employed as a professor at Dominican College in Ávila. Among other things, he was there also the confessor of St.. Theresa and she acted as spiritual adviser until her death in 1582. From 1567 to 1573 he was professor at the University of Alcalá, then rain and a professorship at the Order of the College of St. Gregory at Valladolid and from 1577 until his retirement at the University of Salamanca.

Known for his doctrine of grace, which confronted the doctrine of Luis de Molina, Banez was one of the leading theologians of the Thomistic Scholasticism of the 16th century. His views were the main points of contention between Thomism and Molinism.
