Dominican Church and Convent of St. James in Sandomierz

The Roman Catholic St Jacob's church is located in the Staromiejska Street in Sandomierz in Poland.

History

Since 1226 there was a branch of the Dominican order against the city, the first one to the Holy Paul consecrated church, which was donated by a Iwo Odrowąż, built and expanded by its own monastery. The construction work lasted until around 1250 and were probably the first Mongol invasion in 1241 slow to a halt. A special feature is the located on the north side late Romanesque portal.

The church was built as a three-aisled basilica brick masonry, an architectural feature, because the urban area has suitable natural stone building material. It is considered the first church building in the Kingdom of Poland, which was completely built out of brick masonry, architectural history, the design of the north portal with Lombard churches is related. Some masonry games were designed with patterns of ornate bricks ( braid and zig -zag pattern ). Following the design principles of the Dominican Order had the church building no integrated clock tower, just a roof turret with bell. A belfry was erected as Campanile short distance to the church was only somewhat later, in 1314 yet.

According to local tradition, the abbot of the monastery of Blessed Sadok and 60 other monks and visitors to the worship of the city was martyred when the city was devastated and plundered in 1260 by a raid of the Tartars. The victims were erected a memorial chapel in the grounds of the convent and at the same time laid the foundation for a pilgrimage.

The interior of the church is decorated with today's addition to the preserved architectural components ( net vault ) and the wooden partitions valuable stained glass windows, they are from the years 1910 to 1918 and were made according to the design of Karol Frycz.

Pilgrimages

At the church, the small Polish section of the pilgrimage begins, also leads since 2010 by the Via Jagiellonica at the church.
