Don Mills (TTC)

Don Mills is an underground subway station in Toronto and the eastern terminus of the Sheppard line of the Toronto Subway. It is located at the intersection of Sheppard Avenue and Don Mills Road, right next to the main shopping center Fairview Mall. The station, which has a central platform, is used daily by an average of 31,500 passengers (2009 /10).

Station

Don Mills is a major transportation hub. Connected to the station is an underground bus station situated 14 bus platforms. From here there are nine bus routes of urban society Toronto Transit Commission (TTC ) and four bus routes from York Region Transit in the neighboring municipalities of the Regional Municipality of York. In addition, the commuters is a park -and-ride with 366 paid parking and a kiss- and-ride available.

Stephen Cruise designed the artistic concept of the station: The tiles in the distributor level represent the geological strata through which the tunnel of the Sheppard Line leads, as well as representations of the local flora and fauna. The floor pattern on the platform have bronze-colored deposits that represent fossils of fish and turtles.

History

The opening of the station took place on 24 November 2002, together with the entire Sheppard line between Sheppard - Yonge and Don Mills. Published in 2003, the TTC is a report, which ranks an extension of the Sheppard line east to Scarborough as the highest priority, because the track could just as fully effective. However, the province of Ontario is now the metro construction other priorities, which is why Don Mills will remain long-term terminus.

As compensation for the no longer desired extension of the subway, the city of Toronto is planning two light rail lines, which are supposed to have its starting point in Don Mills as part of the Transit City project. The Sheppard East LRT is 13.6 kilometers above ground lead east to Scarborough; Construction work began in November 2009 and will be completed in 2013. To the south is a long lead Don Mills LRT to station on the Bloor- Danforth Pape Line from 2016, the 17.6 km.
