Doon Castle

Doon Castle, on the southern half of the Rhins of Galloway Peninsula, in Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland is a Broch on a narrow spit of land Ardwell Point, south of Ardwell Bay on the North channel. The majority of Broch's located in the north of Scotland and Doon Castle is the southernmost and most of the few examples in the southwest.

It is not to be confused with " Loch Doon Castle ," a Castle on an island in Loch Doon.

Description

The place of Broch is cut off from the land by a wall and a ditch which spans a dam. The Broch is relatively well preserved. He has access to the sea and a second on the land side, which is very unusual and understandable only by the location on the promontory. The chamber has about nine feet in diameter within a 3.75 m thick wall. The interior of the Broch is covered with rubble. The remains of the wall stand up to a height of 1.8 m. There is a niche on the east side. Probably there was a second on the west side. The narrower outside entrances have stops for the doors.

The outside plant consists of a more than 2.6 m thick wall that encloses an area of 14 × 10 m between the Broch and the end of the headland.
