Dorothea Nicolai

Dorothea Nicolai (born 1962 ) is a German designer. Since 2012 she is " Director costume and mask " of the Salzburg Festival.

Life and work

Nicolai initially went through a dressmaker in Munich. First theater experiences she made in the costume department of the Bavarian State Theatre under the costume Directorate of Antje Lau. In 1986, she worked as a costume assistant and assistant stage. From 1986 Dorothea Nicolai then completed a costume study for wardrobe mistress and costume expert at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Hamburg Dirk von Bodisco and Brigitte tribe.

This was followed by vocational work as costume designer, wardrobe mistress and costume designer in France, Italy, Belgium and Austria. She was among other things, wardrobe mistress at the Ateliers du Costume, headed by Danièle Boutard, in Paris. From 1990, she received free exposure as a costume designer at the Bavarian television documentaries for the History of the Post Office and the French course Bon Courage.

She was from 1992 to 1995 costume assistant at the Salzburg Festival. From 1993 to 1996 she had a teaching assignment at the same time for costume history at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. From 1995 to 1999 she was then " production manager Costume" in the National Theatres in Vienna for the Vienna State Opera. In this role, she was responsible for the costumes of the Vienna State Opera Ballet in classical ballet productions; furthermore, she designed costumes for modern choreography by Christine Gaigg and Nicolas Musin.

From 1999 to 2007 Nicolai was responsible as " Head of costume and mask " for the costume department of the Salzburg Festival. In her role as " Head of costume and mask ," she was one of the seven main heads of departments of the festival. She designed costumes for theater, opera and ballet. In 2006, Nicolai created for the Salzburg Festival for the ballet evening of Mozart's Idomeneo - CHACONNE with the final Chaconne from the opera Idomeneo two costumes from original designs from the 18th century. The costumes were doing at the University of Salzburg faithfully reconstructed by Nicolai for historical template from the Derra de Moroda Dance Archives. Nicolai Costumes determined the aesthetics of production and dialogue between dance and costume. Furthermore, they developed in the Mozart Year 2006 for the Salzburg Festival, the costumes for the new production of Mozart's early works Apollo et Hyacinthus and The Obligation of the First Commandment in the auditorium of the University of Salzburg. From 2001 to 2007 she was a lecturer at the same time for costume history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

In 2006, she was responsible for designing the costumes for the resumption of the opera Les Troyens at the Paris Bastille Opera; she realized the costumes based on the original designs by Herbert Wernicke, who had staged the opera in 2000 for the Salzburg Festival, and there was responsible for directing, stage design and costumes.

Dorothea was Nicolai 2008-2012 costume director at the Zurich Opera House. Since 2012 she is " Director costume and mask " at the Salzburg Festival; she is responsible for the artistic direction of about 80 Garderobern and robe masters, and from about 60 up artists. For the Salzburg Festival in 2013, she designed the costumes for a production of Mozart's Singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail in a version for kids. They also designed the aprons with Redouté Roses for the debutantes dirndl for the Salzburg Festival Ball end of August 2013.

Since 2005, Dorothea Nicolai member of the Costume Committee of the International Council of Museums (International Council of Museums, ICOM) and a founding member of the Society for costume makers.
