Dorothy Brett

Dorothy Eugenie Brett ( born November 10, 1883 in London, † 24 August 1977 ) was a British or - after their naturalization in 1938 - American painter.

Life

She was the third child of Reginald Brett, 2nd Viscount Esher, and his wife Eleanor van de Weyer.

In her youth, her little contact with other children and young people were allowed; one exception was the dance classes that she attended together with the children of the royal family.

When Dorothy was 23 years old, she was sent to the Scottish summer home of the family in order to prevent the parents of reluctant viewed contact with Margaret Brooke and her family. There saw General Sir Ian Hamilton some of her drawings and brought her parents to give her lessons at the Slade School of Fine Art.

From the four-year period at the Slade School, where she studied with Dora Carrington, Mark Gertler and David Bomberg, came their habit is only to denote their last name. The acquaintance with Augustus John and Lady Ottoline Morrell fell into their time at the Slade School.

Her father financed her own studio soon, but probably not only, to show himself as a patron, but also to keep the eccentric daughter and her friends of the family.

In the years at the Slade School, a hearing impairment developed in board, which they eventually forced to use a hearing aid. He is described in a story by DH Lawrence, whose acquaintance she made in October 1915. After time at the Slade School Board initially lived mainly in the vicinity of Oxford, where she was part of the Bloomsbury Group. In 1919, she received from her parents a house a Hampstead and a yearly appanage, which made them independent.

The Return of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence from North America in 1923 led to a change in her life: Lawrence had found the ideal place in Taos establishing his commune Rananim. 1924 board with the couple traveled there and was at home there. Even after Lawrence was died in 1930, she stayed with his widow Frieda. Another important person - and patron - Mable Dodge Luhan in Taos was.

Works

Board paintings from New Mexico show Native Americans. Your Ceremonials, images that were painted according to studies in the Pueblo of Taos, are perhaps their most famous works.

Many works Dorothy board are preserved in the Ransom Center 's Dorothy Brett Art Collection. They include, inter alia, portraits of Aldous Huxley, DH Lawrence, and Robinson Jeffers. Also in the Spud Johnson Collection and the William Goyen Collection are paintings board, as well as the Tate Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
