Dory Chamoun

Dory Chamoun ( born 1931 ) (Arabic: دوري شمعون ) is a Lebanese politician who leads the National Liberal Party, and is also a prominent member of Qurnat - Schahwan Collection, an alliance of politicians, academics and business people, the pro- Syrian policy of President Émile Lahoud face.

Life

Dory Chamoun is the elder son of the late Camille Chamoun, was the 1952-1958 President of Lebanon. First, he became an engineer because he showed a lot less interest in politics than his younger brother Dany Chamoun. After a 1990 Dany was assassinated, he agreed, however, to take over the leadership of the National Liberal Party, which his father had founded in 1958 and which was led by Dany at the time of his death.

Since then he has traveled extensively to advertise the opposition to the military presence of Syria in Lebanon in Lebanese communities in France, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. Dory Chamoun is the foreign assistance not attached; He has said publicly that he did not trust Israel, and accused it, " leave " the Lebanese Christians to have, as they were dependent on Israeli aid, and repeated doubts about the seriousness of the American and French demands a withdrawal of Syrian forces from the Lebanon expressed. Under Chamoun leadership, the National Liberal Party lost the last three elections to the Lebanese National Assembly in the years 1992, 1996 and 2000 boycotted because he claimed that they were manipulated to give a pro-Syrian majority. After the attack on the convoy of former Prime Minister Rafiq al -Hariri on 14 February 2005, he was a prominent participant in the Cedar Revolution that the complete withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanese territory, as well as the resignation of the pro-Syrian government and the holding of free and fair legislative and presidential elections demanded.

Chamoun political boycott was not referring to the local politics. He is the mayor of the village Deir el- Qamar.

Dory Chamoun suffered some personal tragedies in his life, including the murder of his brother Dany, but also his youngest son. He has another son, Camille Chamoun Jr., who was also politically active and who was unsuccessful in the elections in May and June 2005.

On January 27, 2006 Dory Chamoun declared his candidacy for the vacant seat of the Maronite constituency Baabda Aley against May Chidiac. However, the seat went to Pierre Daccache.
