Porphyry dwarf perch ( Pictichromis porphyrea )

The basslets ( Pseudochromidae ), coastal living marine fish from the group of perch relatives ( Percomorpha ). The family includes six subfamilies with 20 genera and about 150 species. They are found in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean and in the Red Sea and live strictly bound to coral reefs in caves and crevices.

Features

The body of the dwarf perch is elongated, laterally flattened and often gorgeously colored. They are usually 5 to 18 centimeters long. An exception is the Aalbarsche the subfamily Congrogadinae. It has a differs from the other dwarf perch elongated body shape and are 10 to 50 inches long. Basslets have large eyes with a slightly oval pupil. Your mouth is large and well dentate.

Dorsal and anal fins have one to three spines. The pelvic fins, which may also be missing, supported by a sting and three to five soft rays. Your base is under or in front of the pectoral fin base. The Aalbarschen lack the spines in the anal fin, its dorsal fin is supported 21-37, anal fin 13 to 21 soft rays. The sidelines of basslets may be continuous or interrupted. The number of Branchiostegalstrahlen is six.

Way of life

Basslets live hidden in coral reefs in shallow water. They feed on prey on small crustaceans and other invertebrates. Basslets live in pairs or in harem groups. They are hermaphrodites, ie, a single animal can both females and males. With a pair of the larger animal is always the male. All basslets spawn in caves. The male guards the eggs until hatching of the larvae after about a week. The eggs stick with filaments to each other and to the substrate.

System

Basslets are probably close to the miracle bass ( Plesiopidae ), related Feenbarschen ( Grammatidae ) and wells farmers ( Opistognathidae ).
