Douglas Hamilton, 8th Duke of Hamilton

Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 8th Duke of Hamilton, 6th Duke of Brandon, Marquess of Clydesdale and Douglas, Earl of Angus, Lanark, Arran and Cambridge ( born July 24, 1756 Holyrood Palace; † August 2, 1799 at the Hamilton Palace ), was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

Douglas was a son of James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Campbell, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon. He followed his brother James as 8th Duke of Hamilton. Douglas Hamilton was educated at Eton College. In 1782 he was given a seat in the British House of Lords. When his mother's death in 1790 he inherited the title of Baron Hamilton of Hameldon, 1794, he was Lord- Lieutenant to 1799 of Lanarkshire. In the British Army, he served to the rank of Colonel.

He married in 1778 Elizabeth ( 1757-1837 ), daughter of Peter Burrell. The childless marriage was divorced in 1794 and Elizabeth remarried Henry Cecil, 1st Marquess of Exeter. As Duke of Hamilton followed Douglas ' Uncle Archibald. From his association with Harriet Pye Bennett he had a daughter born out of wedlock: Lady Anne (1796-1844), married in 1820 Henry Robert Westenra, 3rd Baron Rossmore of Monaghan.
