Drauzio Varella

Drauzio Varella ( born January 1, 1943 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian physician and author.

After studying medicine at the university of his native city Varella first specialized in infectious diseases and later on immunology and oncology. From 1986, he joined Radio programs for young people, with articles on health issues, such as about AIDS, on and later on television. From 1989 to 2001 he was a volunteer in prison Carandiru in AIDS prevention works. His experience and the appalling prison conditions describes his book Estação Carandiru ( German: Metro station Carandiru ), which was made ​​into a film by Hector Babenco with Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos in the role Varellas 2002. 2009 was reported on the participation Varellas on a research project of the Universidade Paulista, which will detect herbal remedies for cancer therapy in the rich flora of the Brazilian rainforest.
