You, you 're lying in my heart is a German folk song that originated before 1821, was published until the 1970s, on recordings and in many films was used.

History

During the 19th century, the song has been translated into several languages, including Dutch ( Gij, gij, ligt aan mij 't hard ) and English ( Here, here deep in my bosom or thou, thou liv'st in this true heart in England, Am I not fondly thine own or thou, thou reign'st in this bosom in the U.S.). The origin of the text and the melody is unknown. The earliest known printed version was published without an indication of authorship in Berlin in 1821 as part of a play by Christoph Friedrich Bretzner. Particularly widespread was the song in Württemberg, Bavaria and Tyrol.

Use in the film

You, you 're lying in my heart was played in Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat (1943 ) of Canada Lee on the flute and sung by Walter Slezak. In Stanley Kramer film Judgment at Nuremberg (1961 ) the song is found in a version of Ernest Gold. In the 1920s, 30s and 40s, the song was used in many other films, including the ring for love ( 1932) by John Ford, The drama of the Flood (1928 ) by Michael Curtiz ( sung by Louise Fazenda ), Four Sons ( 1940) and Ever in My Heart ( 1933) by Archie Mayo played ( and sung by Otto Kruger ) and Hazardous honeymoon ( 1943) by Richard Thorpe ( sung by Joan Crawford and Fred MacMurray ). A recording of the song by Marlene Dietrich was part of the documentary Marlene Dietrich: Her Own Song ( 2001). In the novel adaptation meat my vegetables (2008), the melody is used as a recurring motif in connection with the mother of the protagonist.
