Duart Castle

Duart Castle ( Gaelic: Caisteal Dhubhairt ), not to be confused with the nearby, formerly also known as Duart House Torosay Castle is a Scottish castle, which is located on the Isle of Mull. The castle can be dated back to the 13th century. It is the seat of the MacLeans.

After the defeat of the Jacobites in 1691 an English garrison was stationed on the damaged in the course of the uprising castle. In 1751 the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair until the early 20th century, when the ruin repurchased by the MacLeans and Sir Fitzroy MacLean, 26, Chief of the Clan, these from 1911 to plans by the Scottish architect Sir John James Burnet ( 1857-1938 ) was restored.

Duart Castle in 1969 was location of the film When Eight Bells Toll with Anthony Hopkins. Here the film Entrapment starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta -Jones was shot in 1999 as well. Today, the castle can be visited and provides among other things for its informative exhibition about the Boy Scouts. In the outbuildings there is a cafe.
