Clan MacLean

MacLean is the name of a Scottish clan, who hails from the southern Inner Hebrides and the adjacent land areas, especially Jura, Mull and Morvern.

History

Progenitor is Gilleathain na Tuaidh ( " Gillian of the Battleaxe " ), who lived in the 13th century. The MacLean quickly became supporters of the powerful MacDonalds and their claim to the title of Lord of the Isles ( " Lord of the Isles "); so 1411 was about the chief in the Battle of Red Harlaw. The ancestral castle, Duart Castle on Mull, in 1910 went again into the possession of the clan.

The motto of the MacLean is Virtue mine honor ( "Virtue is my honor ").
