History

The name of the clan goes back to several villages on the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, who were called La Haye. The word comes from haye haia (translated: Hedge ) and is now sharks in France written. It may be theoretically " Palisade " meant, but due to the characteristic of the Normandy hedgerows ( bocage ), this translation rather neglected here. The original French name de la Haye appears in Latin texts as de Haya and developed so gradually in English to Hay. and rendered into Gaelic as Garadh. According to George Fraser Black was MacGaradh ( the Gaelic form of Hay ) is only an invention of John Hay Allan, also known as John Sobieski Stuart, author of questionable Vestiarium Scoticum
