William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll

William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll KT, PC ( February 21, 1801 *, † April 19, 1846 ) was a Scottish peer.

Life and career

Hay was the son of William Hay, 17th Earl of Erroll, and his wife Alice. He attended Eton College. On December 4, 1820, he married at Westminster Abbey Elizabeth FitzClarence, an illegitimate daughter of King William IV and Dorothy Jordan. The couple had four children.

From 1836 to 1846 Hay was Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire. He has also held various positions since 1830 in the British court; he was from 1839 to 1841, Lord Steward of the Household.

1819 Hay had inherited the title when his father died. In 1831 he was appointed Baron Kilmarnock. This title belongs to the peerage of the United Kingdom and was different than the older Scottish Would automatically connected to a seat in the House of Lords.

Hay died at the age of 45 years in London. His titles were transferred to the eldest son.
