Elizabeth Hay, Countess of Erroll

Elizabeth Hay, Countess of Erroll ( born Elizabeth FitzClarence, * January 17, 1801; † January 16, 1856 in Edinburgh, Scotland) was the illegitimate daughter of King William IV and Dorothy Jordan.

At the age of 19 she married on December 4, 1820 William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll in Westminster. By her marriage she received the courtesy title automatically Countess of Erroll. In all likelihood, because of Lady Elizabeth's home, her husband was appointed to the Second High Steward. Elizabeth is pictured on a Fitzclarence family portrait in the House of Dun. In memory of their father William IV she kept a stone that was thrown at him, and the gloves, which he wore in his first opening of parliament.

Children and other descendants

With her husband she had four children:

  • Lady Adelaide Harriet Augusta Hay ( * October 18, 1821, † October 22, 1867 ), one of the bridesmaids to the Queen, Viscountess Campden
  • William Harry Hay, 19th Earl of Erroll (* May 3, 1823; † December 3, 1891 ), ∞ Eliza Amelia Gore.
  • Lady Agnes Georgiana Elizabeth Hay ( * May 12, 1829, † December 18, 1869 ), ∞ James Duff, 5th Earl Fife. Their son, Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife, married Princess Louise, the daughter of Edward VII
  • Lady Alice Mary Emily Hay ( * July 7, 1835, † June 7, 1881 ), Charles Edward Louis Casimir Stuart ∞ ( 1824-1882; aka Count d' Albanie ) a nephew of John Sobieski Stuart.

Elizabeth Hay is, therefore, the maternal grandmother of Princess Louise's husband, Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife.

The British leader David Cameron is a great-great -great- great-grandson of Elizabeth Hay, thus making it a staggered two generations cousin of the fifth degree from Queen Elizabeth II.
