Earl of Erroll

Earl of Erroll is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is supported by the Family Hay.

The respective Earl is Chief of the Clan Hay. He has held the hereditary office of Lord High Constable of Scotland, ranking in the Scottish Protocol Aryan hierarchy (order of precedence ) immediately after the royal family and the highest representatives of the United Kingdom and Scotland, but before all other peers. Since 1948, the Earl has again its own herald, the Slains Pursuivant.

Award

The title was created in 1453 for Sir William Hay. How many older Scottish title he can pass to the eldest daughter if no sons entitled to inherit are present.

1666 the 11th Earl was awarded by the Crown the right to determine for themselves a title heirs if there is no direct descendant is present. Of this he made use in 1674, when he appointed his cousin and his descendants to Title heirs.

Subordinate title

The Earl of Erroll leads the subordinate title of Lord Hay ( created in 1449 ) and Lord Slains ( created in 1452 ) which also both belong to the peerage of Scotland.

The heir takes the courtesy title of Lord Hay.

Another title

The 18th Earl married in 1820 Elizabeth FitzClarence, an illegitimate daughter of King William IV in order to give him a seat in the House of Lords, who was not connected with the Scottish dignities, Hay in 1831 awarded the title Baron Kilmarnock. This title, which belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom may be awarded only in the male line. After the death of Earl 22, of a daughter but had no son, therefore he fell to his younger brother.
