John Hay, 1st Lord Hay of Yester

John Hay, 1st Lord Hay of Yester (* 1450, † after October 1508) was a Scottish nobleman and first Marquess of Tweeddale. On January 29, 1488 he was appointed by King James III. appointed by Scotland to the Lord of Parliament.

John Hay was born in 1450 in Peeblesshire, the son of Sir David Hay, Laird of punch Worth and Laird of Yester ( Yester in East Lothian ) ( 1400-1478 ). His mother was Lady Elizabeth Hay (1397-1448), daughter of George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus and Lady Mary Stewart ( † 1458 ), daughter of King Robert III. of Scotland.

Hay was married twice. In 1642 he married Lady Mariot Lindsay, daughter of John Lindsay, 1st Lord Lindsay of the Byres, with whom he had one child:

  • Sir Thomas Hay, Master of Yester (* 1470 ) ∞ Elizabeth Borthwick ( 1477-1544 ), daughter of Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home, the later James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran married
  • Lady Isabel Hay ( illegitimate) ∞ Sir Walter Ker of Cessford († 1501)

From his second marriage ( to the December 17, 1468; marriage contract ) with Lady Elizabeth Cunningham († 1529), daughter of George Cunningham of Belton went six children were born:

  • Sir John Hay, 2nd Lord Hay of Yester (* 1470, † September 9, 1513 at the Battle of Flodden Field)
  • George Hay of Menzion (* 1471 )
  • Isobel Hay ∞ Sir Robert Lauder of The Bass
  • Margaret Hay ( † 1525) ∞ 1491 William Borthwick, 3rd Lord Borthwick ( 1460s -1503 )
