Dudley Garrett

Dudley "Red" Garrett (* July 14, 1924 in Toronto, Ontario, † November 24, 1944 in Port- aux- Basques, Newfoundland ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defender, who in his time as Active 1942-1943 for the New York Rangers played in the National Hockey League.

Career

Red Garrett began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at the Toronto Shamrocks in the season 1940/41. The following season, the defender, who was standing at the Toronto Maple Leafs under contract was submitted to the at that time the farm team, the Toronto Marlboros, for whom he scored seven points scorer in 18 games (including two goals). In the same season he ran to twelve times for the Toronto Red Indians and scored five points scorer, including a goal. In 1942, Garrett was discharged from the Maple Leafs along with Babe Pratt to the New York Rangers. In his first and only season in the National Hockey League Garrett came up with 23 inserts for the Rangers, where he scored two points scorer, of which again a goal. He also played six times for the former farm team of the Rangers, the Providence Reds of the American Hockey League. Shortly after his involvement with the Rangers Garrett joined the army and died on 24 November 1944, after a combat mission in Port- aux- Basques, Newfoundland.

In his memory, the rookie of the year, the American Hockey League with the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award is awarded annually since 1947.
