Duke of Gloucester

Duke of Gloucester is a British peerage, which was often given to one of the sons of the reigning monarch. The first four awards were made in the peerage of England ( Peerage of England ), the next ceremony in the peerage of Great Britain ( Peerage of Great Britain) and the last in the peerage of the United Kingdom ( Peerage of the United Kingdom). Since the last ceremony also includes the title of duke of subsidiary titles Earl of Ulster and Baron Culloden.

Explanations

For the first time the title thirteenth child of King Edward III .. was awarded to Thomas of Woodstock, after the death of Thomas went out of the title. The second award was presented to Humphrey of Lancaster, fifth son of King Henry IV But he died without heirs, so the title became extinct again.

The next ceremony was Richard Plantagenet, brother of King Edward IV. When the Duke of Gloucester as Richard III. himself became king, the title merged with the crown. After the death of Richard the title was considered inauspicious because his first three carriers had died without heirs, respectively. He was not awarded in the next 150 years, until it was the son of King Charles I, Henry Stuart. But even this died young without heirs and the title became extinct again.

The son of Queen Anne, William, had the title throughout his short life (1689-1700), an official ceremony, however, never took place. Next official owner was Prince William Henry, brother of George III. ; In this ceremony he was Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh.

The fifth and so far last ceremony was Prince Henry, son of King George V, now again as Duke of Gloucester. After Henry's death the titles passed to his son Richard, who carries it with her. Currently, Alexander Windsor would be the next heir; he currently bears the courtesy title Earl of Ulster.
