Duke of Montrose

Duke of Montrose is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, named after the town of Montrose, Scotland, which is now supported by the Graham family. He has previously been awarded already once in the Peerage of Scotland.

Ancestral home of the family is Auchmar at Loch Lomond. The holder of the title is also the head of the Clan Graham.

Ceremonies

The first award of the title was 1488 David Lindsay, 5th Earl of Crawford, who had held almost all the important offices of state in Scotland. He was King James III. loyal and the first Scot, who received a Dukedom, without being a member of the royal family.

That same year, the title of King James IV realized from him, gave him Lindsay however again next year with the proviso that the dignity can not be inherited. With the death of Lindsay in 1495 the Dukedom therefore went out.

The second ceremony took place in the Peerage of Scotland in 1707 to James Graham, 4th Marquess of Montrose. He had contributed as Chairman of the Scottish Privy Council significantly to the realization of the Act of Union.

Subordinate title

The family had been added to the peerage in 1415 already. The fourth Lord Graham was collected in 1505 for the Earl of Montrose. The famous military leader James Graham, 5th Earl of Montrose in 1644 received the dignity of Marquess.

The Duke now leads the subsidiary title Marquess of Montrose ( created 1644), Marquess of Graham and Buchanan ( created 1707), Earl of Montrose ( created 1505), Earl of Kincardine ( created 1707), Earl Graham ( created 1722), Viscount Dundaff ( created 1707), Lord Graham ( created 1415), Lord Aberruthven, Mugdock and Fintrie ( created 1707) and Baron Graham ( created 1722).

While the title Earl and Baron Graham Graham belong to the Peerage of Great Britain, so that the Duke always had a seat and vote in the House of Lords, includes all other title in the Peerage of Scotland.

The heir takes the courtesy title Marquess of Graham and Buchanan, the eldest son of the Earl of Kincardine and those whose oldest son, so the great-grandson of the Duke, the title Viscount Dundaff.
