Duke of Wellington (title)

The Duke of Wellington, German Duke of Wellington, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is run by the family Wellesley.

The family seat is Stratfield Saye House in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Apsley House in London is now part of the English Heritage, although the family still has an apartment there.

Award

The title was awarded to Arthur Wellesley in 1814. This was the most important British military leader and statesman of the Napoleonic period. His greatest achievement was the victory over Napoleon Bonaparte together with Blücher at the Battle of Waterloo. Later, he was then twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Subordinate title

Wellesley had already been appointed in 1809 to Baron Douro and Viscount Wellington, Earl of Wellington on 28 February 1812 and the Marquess of Wellington on 4 October 1812.

With the Dukedom Wellesley the title of Marquess Douro was awarded also still. All of the above titles are also included in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The second Duke succeeded with the death of his childless cousin also have the Irish title Earl of Mornington ( created 1760), Viscount Wellesley ( created 1760) and Baron Mornington ( created in 1746 ). These titles are all assigned to the Peerage of Ireland. He was thus head of the oldest line of the Wellesley family.

The eldest son of the respective Dukes leads the courtesy title Marquess Douro, the oldest son of the Earl of Mornington those whose eldest son in turn those of a Viscont Wellesley.
